Gruyères Castle wasn’t just a fortress—it was the power seat of the Dukes of Gruyères, a family that ruled the region for centuries. Talk about a rough ending!
After his downfall, the castle didn’t sit empty for long. From 1555 to 1848, it became home to Fribourg’s bailiffs, who gave it a Baroque-style makeover. Then, in 1849, the Bovy and Balland families from Geneva took over, ushering in a new era of artistic flourishing. Under the patronage of Daniel Bovy, the castle became a hub for creatives, inspiring renowned artists like Camille Corot and Berthélémy Menn.
But history has a way of repeating itself—just like the Dukes of Gruyères, the private owners eventually ran into financial trouble. With no other choice, they sold the castle to the Canton of Fribourg. Planning Your Visit to Gruyères Castle
Gruyères Castle is open every day of the year, including Christmas and New Year’s, so there’s no excuse not to visit this Swiss gem! From April to October, you can explore the castle from 9 am to 6 pm, and from November to March, it’s open from 10 am to 5 pm. Make sure to arrive at least 45 minutes before closing—but for a truly immersive experience, I recommend arriving an hour before to soak in all the history and beauty the castle has to offer.
Your entrance ticket gives you access to the castle, the lovely garden (open from Easter to October), and any temporary exhibitions on display. During winter, the garden can be admired from the ramparts or the castle balcony. Ticket prices are CHF 13 for adults and CHF 5 for kids ages 6-15.
Please note, Gruyères Castle is a historic monument, so there are many staircases, and access can be tricky for people with reduced mobility. Wheelchair users can visit the esplanade, courtyard, and, depending on the season, parts of the garden.

Getting to Gruyères Castle and Village
Getting to Gruyères Castle and the charming village is a breeze, whether you’re driving or taking public transport. If you’re coming by car, keep in mind that the town of Gruyères is car-free, so you’ll need to park in one of the nearby parking lots. From there, it’s a pleasant 10 to 20-minute walk through the picturesque village to reach the castle.
Prefer to take public transport? Traveling from Zurich to Gruyères by train is simple and scenic! Start by taking an Intercity (IC) train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof (main station) to Fribourg, which takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Once you arrive in Fribourg, transfer to an RE3 train heading to Broc-Chocolatier. This leg of the journey will take around 40 minutes. From Broc, you’ll hop on the S50 train, which will bring you directly to Gruyères station in less than 10 minutes. In total, the trip should take about 2 hours—and the views along the way are definitely worth it!
From Gruyères-Gare train station, it’s just a 20-minute walk to the castle. Alternatively, you can take the bus to Gruyères-Ville, which is conveniently located at the entrance of the town. From there, it’s only a 5 to 10-minute walk to the castle. No matter how you arrive, the walk itself is a lovely way to experience the beauty of the village!
