I have fond memories of visiting Swissminiatur in Melide as a child, hand-in-hand with my grandparents, captivated by the incredible attention to detail in the miniature landscapes of Switzerland. Fast forward to today, and I’ve had the joy of returning, first with my own children and most recently with friends and their little one. Each visit has brought a fresh wave of wonder and nostalgia.
Nestled near the picturesque shores of Lake Lugano, Swissminiatur proudly holds the title of Switzerland’s largest open-air miniature museum. Set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountains—including Monte Generoso, San Salvatore, and UNESCO World Heritage-listed San Giorgio—it’s a perfect blend of artistry and nature.
The museum’s well-maintained paths are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the experience. Whether you’re visiting with young children or simply looking to appreciate the country’s iconic sights in a unique format, Swissminiatur is a delightful destination that invites exploration and enjoyment for all ages.
Journey through History
Pierre Vuigner founded Swissminiatur in Melide in 1959 with the goal of building a model park that would showcase Switzerland in its entirety on a little scale, modeled after the Dutch park “Maduro Dam.”
Dominique, the son of Pierre, took over the park’s management in 1980. He carried on his father’s passion and energy and was constantly looking forward, seeking new ideas and opportunities for expansion.
In June 2019, at the park’s 60th anniversary celebration, Joël Vuigner, Dominique’s son, assumed leadership of Swissminiatur. Like the generations before him, he is driven to accomplish novel and inventive tasks and leave his mark while keeping up with the current.

Exploring the Park’s Delights
Wander around the Swiss Alps
As you follow the path through the 14,000 square meters of Swissminiatur, you’ll get to explore some of Switzerland’s most iconic landmarks—all in miniature! From castles and cathedrals to railroads and cable cars, the park is filled with 129 meticulously crafted models, each scaled down to 1:25. It’s like taking a mini tour of the whole country, with everything from historic buildings to typical farmhouses on display.

One of the coolest parts is the intricate railway system, with 18 little trains chugging along over bridges and through stations on more than 3,500 meters of track. The attention to detail is amazing, and every year they add new models and upgrade existing ones. It’s not just trains either—you’ll also spot boats gliding through rivers and lakes, and cable cars making their way up and down the mountainsides.

And if you want to learn more as you go, you can always download the Swissminiatur app to get all the details about each of the mini landmarks you’re passing.
Savor the Diversity of Plants!
One of the things that makes Swissminiatur even more special is the vibrant sea of flowers surrounding you—there are 15,000 different types! It feels like a little paradise for nature lovers, and it definitely caught my eye. You can’t help but stop and admire the colorful blooms as you stroll through the park.
Ride the Little Train
For just a small fee, you can hop on a cute little tourist train that takes you around the park. I remember how much my kids used to love riding that train—there’s something so charming about seeing the miniatures from this perspective, and it adds a playful touch to your visit.
Let the Kids have a Blast in the Play Area
There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained, too! The park has a fun play area, complete with coin-operated rides like bumper boats. The little one with us absolutely loved it, and it’s a great way to let kids burn off some energy while you relax for a bit.
Take a Peek inside the Workshop
If you’re curious about how all these amazing models come to life, Swissminiatur offers public visits to their workshop on certain days of the year. We didn’t get a chance to go inside, but if you’re lucky enough to visit on one of those days, you can join a guided tour and see firsthand how they create these detailed miniatures. It’s a unique way to appreciate the craftsmanship even more!
Feed the Fish
One of the highlights of our visit was feeding the fish that stray through the rivers! You can purchase a bag of fish food from the souvenir store at the entrance for a small fee. It’s so much fun to watch the fish leap out of the water for a snack. The young girl in our group was absolutely captivated—it was such a simple but joyful experience!
Pick up a Souvenir
The shop, located directly next to the entrance, sells a variety of gifts, including magnets, mugs, furry friends, t-shirts, and sweets and confectionery goods. If you arrive with baggage, it is possible to store it at the shop throughout your visit.
Where to Eat at Swissminiatur
A Grotto inside the park named “Pinin” provides ice cream, cold beverages, and a selection of sandwiches and snacks for a satisfying respite. Additionally, you are welcome to provide your own food to eat in the picnic area.
