History

Castle Chillon Montreux has a rich history that dates back to 1150 when it was first home to the noble Savoy family. Count Thomas 1st of Savoy (1189-1233) played a pivotal role in the evolution of the castle by directing a massive renovation and expansion project to strengthen the fortress.

Over the years, Chillon changed hands quite a few times. The Bernese seized the castle and its surrounding territory in 1536 and turned it into the seat of government for the Bailiwick of Vevey. The castle’s strategic importance in the area is reflected in the fact that it was later used as both a jail and an armory.

Later, during the Vaudois Revolution in 1798, Chillon Castle was acquired by the Canton of Vaud.

This was when Chillon started to shift from a fortress to a more romanticized landmark. It captured the imagination of artists and travelers, thanks to the writings of famous figures like Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, and Lord Byron. What was once a prison became a museum and a beloved tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the globe.

The Castle Museum

If you’re interested in the history of Chillon Castle, you’re in for a treat! The castle is home to a fascinating museum showcasing its past and the treasures uncovered on-site between 1862 and 1936. The permanent exhibition features about 300 incredible artifacts and relics that offer a glimpse into life at Chillon through the ages.

But that’s not all—the ‘fonds Chillon’ (Chillon Collection) is also part of the story, with pieces housed at the Cantonal Museum of Archaeology & History in Lausanne.

And for an extra layer of discovery, the castle frequently hosts temporary exhibits that dive deeper into its history, the surrounding region, and even spotlight cutting-edge local art.

Excavations from the late 19th century reveal that this site has been occupied since the Bronze Age. Sitting on a naturally protected rocky island, the castle’s location made it a key point for controlling passage between northern and southern Europe.

The castle’s unique oval shape wasn’t just for show—it was designed to perfectly fit the contours of the island, measuring about 100 meters long and 50 meters wide. Even its name, “Chillon,” comes from an ancient word meaning “rocky platform,” a nod to its solid, strategic foundation.

Over the centuries, Chillon Castle saw three major chapters of rule: first by the Savoy family, then by the Bernese bailiffs, and finally as part of Canton Vaud. Each era left its mark on the castle, making it a true reflection of the region’s rich history.

The castle is connected to the outside world by a drawbridge, and you can still see remnants of it today. It served two key purposes: The northern facade was the defensive part, and it was equipped with arrowslits and, subsequently, loopholes to keep criminals off the Via Francigena.

Stunning views of the Vaud Riviera, Lake Geneva, and the mighty Alps may be seen from the royal residence’s spectacular Gothic windows, which are located on the building’s southern facade, facing the lake.

Inside, the layout follows a traditional feudal design, with three major courtyards separated by buildings that housed the castellan, the lord, and their respective households.

One of the coolest parts of the castle is the underground rooms. They feel like something straight out of a grand Gothic cathedral, with vaulted ceilings and an eerie, impressive atmosphere. The dungeon, in particular, stands out. Originally used for storing supplies and weapons, it was later converted into a prison by Peter II of Savoy around 1290. It’s a hauntingly unique feature of the castle, and you can almost feel the weight of history as you stand in it.

Built with untouched stone from the very island it sits on, and decorated with exquisite Gothic vaults crafted by medieval artisans, the castle is a true testament to the craftsmanship of its time. The stone pillars supporting the structure are nearly a thousand years old, adding a sense of awe to the whole place.

With all its beauty and history, it’s no surprise that Castle Chillon is filled with legends, including the story of Bonivard, the man immortalized as the hero of Lord Byron’s famous poem The Prisoner of Chillon.
