As someone who calls Zurich home, I’m always on the lookout for peaceful corners to escape the city buzz—without ever leaving town. Luckily, Zurich has not just one, but two beautiful botanical gardens, both completely free to visit. I often find myself drawn to these green spaces—whether it’s for a quiet lunch break, a slow weekend stroll, or simply to breathe in the fresh, flower-scented air.

If you’re searching for free things to do in Zurich, these gardens are an absolute must. Whether you’re in the mood for a tropical adventure in the futuristic greenhouses of the New Botanical Garden or a historical escape among ancient trees at the Old Botanical Garden, both offer a lush, relaxing retreat in the heart of the city. Let me take you on a little tour of these two green gems!
The New Botanical Garden: A Greenhouse Wonderland
Tucked away in the Riesbach district, the New Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich is a plant lover’s dream. Covering 53,000 square meters, it’s home to an incredible 9,000 plant species from all over the world. And the best part? You don’t need a plane ticket to travel through tropical jungles, dry deserts, and Mediterranean landscapes—you can experience them all right here.

The garden’s most striking feature is its three dome-shaped greenhouses, each replicating a different climate zone:
• Tropical Rainforest – humid, lush, and full of exotic plants
• Lowland Rainforest – showcasing biodiversity from tropical regions
• Tropical Dry Zone – home to cacti and succulents from arid climates

Outside, a peaceful meadow and tranquil pond offer the perfect spot for a picnic or a quiet moment with a book. You’ll also find themed walking trails that highlight endangered plants, alpine flora, and medicinal herbs—making your stroll both relaxing and educational.
And if you’re feeling hungry, there’s a University cafeteria right on site at the New Botanical Garden. Surrounded by greenery, it’s a lovely place to enjoy a freshly prepared meal. The canteen is open to everyone—not just students or university staff—and a lunch menu for external guests costs around CHF 13.
The Old Botanical Garden: A Historic Urban Oasis
Unlike its newer counterpart, the Old Botanical Garden sits right in the heart of Zurich, just a 12-minute walk from the main train station.

Established in 1837, it feels like stepping into a different era—an intimate, historical garden filled with ancient trees, winding paths, and a unique sense of calm.

One of my favorite spots is the Gessner Garden, a medieval-style herb garden that offers a glimpse into 16th-century medicinal plant knowledge—fascinating whether you’re into history or just love learning quirky facts. The Palm House, a stunning 19th-century glass structure, is another highlight. While it’s mostly used for concerts, exhibitions, and theater performances, it remains a beautiful architectural landmark.

The Old Botanical Garden is also home to the Ethnographic Museum of the University of Zurich (Völkerkundemuseum) —a fascinating social anthropology museum. Its exhibitions and events invite visitors to explore the knowledge, traditions, and skills of people from all corners of the world, encouraging respectful and open-minded encounters. Entry is free, though do note that the museum is closed on Mondays, like many others in Zurich.
Some areas of the gardens are currently under renovation until the end of 2025, so you might come across a few restricted sections. That said, the garden still offers a peaceful escape—perfect for a relaxing walk or a quiet moment away from the city’s rush.
Why visit both Botanical Gardens?
Even though I live in Zurich, I still find myself visiting both gardens regularly—and I recommend you do the same! They offer two completely different vibes:
The New Botanical Garden is modern, scientific, and full of exotic surprises.

The Old Botanical Garden is historical, cozy, and perfect for a quiet break.
And of course, the best part? They’re both completely free!
Both the New and Old Botanical Gardens are open daily, offering year-round access to their beautiful green spaces. For exact opening hours and any seasonal changes, please check their official websites: Alter Botanischer Garten (Old Botanical Garden) and Botanischer Garten (New Botanical Garden)
So if you’re putting together a list of free things to do in Zurich, make sure these botanical havens are at the top. Whether you’re here for a weekend or, like me, call Zurich home, these gardens are a reminder that the best things in life (and in this city) don’t have to cost a thing.
How to Get to the Botanical Gardens from Zurich Main Station
Getting to both botanical gardens in Zurich is easy with public transport.
To visit the New Botanical Garden at Zollikerstrasse 107, take Tram 11 and get off at Hegibachplatz. From there you can either walk or take bus 31 or 77. Alternatively, you can take Tram 2 or 4 to Höschgasse and walk from there.

If you’re heading to the Old Botanical Garden, you have a few options: Take a tram to Paradeplatz or Rennweg, from where it’s a 500-meter walk, or take the S10 (toward Uetliberg) or S4 (toward Langnau)from Zurich Main Station (lower level) to Selnau, then walk about 300 meters to reach the garden.
Both routes are convenient, so getting your dose of greenery in Zurich couldn’t be easier!
Keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in the gardens (except for guide dogs).
